Nature Flower Survey Group

Wildflowers are coming back to the Downs

Until 2023 the Downs were kept as mown grass. Since then, large parts have been left to grow, and three summers on our Flower Survey Group volunteers can see the difference.

  • 68wildflower species recorded
  • 23turn up every year
  • 2species of orchid

Pepper saxifrage is a plant of old, undisturbed grassland, and the most encouraging record so far. Pyramidal and common spotted orchids are holding on, and by late summer the knapweed was a mass of colour, busy with bees and butterflies.

Would you borrow a drill instead of buying one? Take our survey

Most of us own tools we’ve used twice. A Library of Things lets people borrow what they need occasionally, for a small fee or for free: drills and sanders, step ladders, pressure washers, gazebos and trestle tables, tents, sewing machines, even specialist baking tins.

The Repair Café is looking into whether Swanage could run one. Thank you to everyone who has filled in the survey so far. We’ve had some great answers, but we need more before we can decide. It only takes three minutes to complete.

Community Sustainable Swanage

Thank you for finding us at Discovery Fest

It was lovely to meet so many of you on Shore Road, and to hear what you’d like to see happen in Swanage. Our stall had displays on energy, marine life, transport, the Downs, tree wardens and wildflowers.

Here’s the climate meter held by our friends from Sustainable Wareham. It gives a clear view of what passersby were thinking about our environment.

  • 88% had been affected by more extreme weather in recent years.
  • Only 17% felt confident about how to prepare for it. More than half (56%) did not.
  • 89% are concerned about nature loss in Purbeck.
  • 59% felt fully informed about climate and nature risks, but a third did not.

Repair Café: two new fixers

We talked with 30 people at Discovery Fest, and two new volunteers signed up. September’s café was busy all morning, with a display from the South East London Meccano Club, who’ll be back in November.

Next café: Saturday 24 October, 10.30am to 12.30pm, Herston Village Hall. Tea, coffee and cake. Just turn up.

Old cables: recycle them too

Most of us have a drawer of cables we’re keeping “just in case”. They contain copper, which the UK needs to build wind turbines and solar panels. If a million people recycled just one cable each, 6,000kg could be reclaimed.

Take yours to Swanage Recycling Centre or the Emporium.

Community National Emergency Briefing

Our petition passed 100,000 signatures

The National Emergency Briefing petition, calling for a TV broadcast on the risks from climate and nature breakdown, has passed 100,000 signatures and will now be considered for debate. If it’s selected, MPs will debate it and a Government minister will have to respond. Everyone in Swanage who came to our screening, signed and shared it helped make this happen. Thank you!

At the Big NEB Update on 31 July, chair Professor Mike Berners-Lee reported thousands of screenings across community, faith and civic settings, and cross-party support from nearly 150 MPs. A student programme has now launched for schools, alongside new toolkits for businesses, councillors and local groups.

Energy New on the website

Our new energy page is live

Everything in one place for warmer homes and lower bills: what solar, batteries and heat pumps really cost, the grants you can get, and who to talk to locally.

  • Boiler Upgrade Scheme: £7,500 towards a heat pump, or up to £9,000 if you’re replacing oil or LPG heating, until 31 March 2027.
  • Switch Together: Dorset Council’s group-buying scheme for solar panels and batteries. The latest round closed on 25 September.
  • Dorset Greener Homes: visit real homes and ask the people who live there. See the October dates.
Transport New on the website

Getting around Swanage without a car

Our new transport page pulls together which buses run where, what’s being built, and how the Purbeck Transport Action Group (P-TAG) is pushing for better links across Purbeck. Three things worth knowing:

  • The Purbeck Shuttle 200 now has funding to run its Wednesday service year-round, linking Wareham Station with RSPB Arne.
  • The Swanage to Studland route is progressing: the Currendon footpath, a possible road crossing near the Studland Road junction, and a new permissive bridleway alongside Ulwell Road.
  • Swanage Town Council is exploring a marked cycle lane on Ulwell Road.

Marine Beyond the Sand

A new group for the sea around Swanage

Beyond the Sand, our new marine group, held its first meeting in June at the Focus Centre, with Nick Reed of Purbeck Sub Aqua Club on what he’s seen beneath the waves and Luke Robinson on the ecology of seaweed and the enterprises growing up around it.

In 2024 Swanage Town Council adopted a Motion for the Ocean, a formal commitment to put the health of the sea at the heart of local decisions. Beyond the Sand is the community group helping turn that into action. Sea swimmers, divers, dog walkers on the beach: no expertise needed, just curiosity.

Transport Swanage Community Travel & Transport

Walk more, cycle more, drive less

Swanage Community Travel & Transport is a new group working on practical ways to improve how we all get around town: safer walking and cycling routes, better community transport, and making it easier to get about without a car. It held its first open meeting in June and welcomes new ideas.

Waste & recycling Repair Café

The Repair Café is growing

The Repair Café has met monthly at Herston Village Hall for some time, fixing clothes, toys and small electricals and keeping them out of landfill. Now it wants to do more: encouraging better recycling, cutting single-use plastic, promoting refill schemes, supporting food redistribution, and exploring a Library of Things.

To make that happen it needs more volunteers. You don’t need to be a fixer: there’s plenty to do in organising, promotion and community outreach.

Can you help?

Roles we’d love to fill

You don’t need to be an expert, and even a few hours makes a difference. Email hello@sustainableswanage.uk and we’ll have a chat.

Communications lead

Help people hear what’s happening, through the newsletter, website news and social posts. Suits someone who writes clearly and knows (or wants to learn) WordPress, Mailchimp and Facebook. One to two hours a week.

Photographers

Share your pictures so our pages show real Swanage rather than stock images. Amateur is absolutely fine.

Flower surveyors

Every few weeks from May to August, explore the Downs and record how the flowers and grasses are changing. Complete beginners welcome: we’ll train you. Email us to join

Repair Café volunteers

Fixers, and people to help with organising, promotion and outreach. Come along to a session at Herston Village Hall and say hello.
